BUILDING THE ARMAND'S JOY

Armand loved the water and loved all things boats. As he grew older he also became focused on leaving a legacy. After retiring in the late 80s he spent time tinkering and traveling and teaching his young grandchildren as much as he could. And then in the mid 90s decided to build a boat. His first was a bright red rowing dory called The Legacy. It was a beautiful boat, but not easy to get into or out of. It also wasn't particularly stable - especially when rowing around with those same grandchildren - the oldest was only 10.

Then in 1997 Armand ordered a kit from Shell Boats to build a Swifty 12. From Shell Boats "The Swifty 12 is our most popular boat, very fine for sailing, also great for rowing and motoring. Docile and easily handled, the Swifty will plane on a reach in a good breeze - while you fly, you’re dry! It has plenty of room for three or four people, but will perform best with one or two." Built in his garage under the house it was no uncommon to visit for dinner and be asked "can you just hold this a couple minutes. There are a handful of pictures with the boat in various stages of assembly and a large smile on Armand's face.

The Armand's Joy was first launched in 1998.
